A 1986 graduate of the College of Osteopaths, Mark then completed a postgraduate course at the Incorporated Society of Registered Naturopaths (ISRN).
Responding to the need to develop the educational infrastructure of the College, Mark went on to gain a Cert Ed and then a BA(hons) in Education. These enabled him to make a significant contribution to the development of the osteopathic programme. The naturopathic elements of which were further enhanced.
After a stint as vice-principal and then as acting-principal, Mark was appointed Principal in February 2003. Faced with the challenges confronting both the College and the Profession at the time, he continued to successfully negotiate the London-based BSc(hons) Osteopathy programme through the Recognised Qualification (RQ) process. In addition, during 2002/3 the College provided another RQ programme of training for those who had been unable to enter the initial GOsC register of practitioners – its graduates were awarded a Certificate in Osteopathic Competence and were subsequently able to register.
In 2005, the College became the first to gain university recognition for a programme established in the North of England. The Stoke-based BSc (hons) Osteopathy was initially validated by Keele University and subsequently gained RQ status in 2008 (this programme is currently validated by Derby University). Further in 2008, both an advanced diploma (ADO) and masters-level programmes (PGCert and MSc) received university validation. All of which included a module in Naturopathy
For two years Mark acted as the Chair of the Council of Osteopathic Education Institutions and retired as Principal of the College of Osteopaths in February 2009, completing a Masters in Medical Science later the same year. He contributed to the development of a Nature Cure programme for the ISRN and supported the natural therapeutic elements informing osteopathic education.
Mark retired from practice in 2018 but continues to lecture.
